Talking to Creditors
Scenario 1
Creditor: Hello. ABC Electric.
Customer: Hello. I need to talk to someone about my bill.
Creditor: What seems to be the problem?
Customer: My husband had a medical emergency and he is going to be out of work for at least eight weeks. I just paid this month's electric bill, but I will not have the money to pay for the next two or three months. My husband's salary will be reduced while he is off and we have to pay for his medical expenses. Can we work out some type of repayment plan so that my electricity is not turned off?
Creditor: I'm really glad that you called in as soon as possible. You may be eligible for an assistance program through the city or federal government. Let me get you the phone numbers.
Customer: What do I have to do to get help from these programs?
Creditor: You will have to call to see if you qualify. They have income limits and you can only use the program once a year.
Customer: What happens if we don't qualify for these programs?
Creditor: If you don't qualify for the assistance programs we will work with you to set up a repayment plan so you continue to have electricity. We can temporarily lower your monthly bill. Then you can make up the payments when your husband is back to work.
Customer: It shouldn't take us too long to get back on our feet. I really appreciate you working with us.
